First off...let's identify the three pieces...(You would not beleive what I have heard!)
Piece
#1-the center...this is the style or design part. It is the part of the
wheel which distinguishes you from anyone else. Most true 3 piece
wheels are 'cut' to order and are usually not found on your gardeners
truck 2 weeks after you bought yours! That is because it is 'cut' by a
CNC machine not poured into a mold on a production line of 100+ of any
given style.
Piece #2-first let me explain that the rim 'halves' are actually two separate pieces. The 'inner' and the 'outer' (no
not innie and outie). The 'inner' is the one that is most critical to
making the wheel fit your vehicle...caliper clearance and offset. The
'outer' is somewhat decorative, as you can choose just how wide, and
exactly how big of a 'lip' you want...within reason and the specs of
your vehicle of course.
Piece #3 - I actually covered piece #3 in #2 above.
The process to make these truly unique wheels takes a bit of time...first of all the manufacturer must cut the wheels (all
4 of them individually) and once they have been cut they need to be
polished then chrome plated or powder-coated which also takes some
time...because the guys who do this are not just waiting for these 4
wheels, they are few and far between, so your wheels get in line!
Once all the parts are together in
one place they need to be assembled. This takes a whole lot of care so
that they go together properly, the correct foot lbs. of torque is
applied to the 30+ bolts that hold it together, then the silicone seal
(remember the 'rim halves') needs to set for at least a day before the
wheels can be shipped.
And there you have your (for the most part) unique master-piece is complete!
